"Improving mothers' literacy skills may be the best way to boost children's achievement"

Children who start kindergarten behind their peers in literacy and reading skills often struggle to catch up. Early literacy predicts reading ability, high school graduation, college attendance, and future career prospects. Our Latino Family Literacy Project program offers ten weekly 90-minute sessions for parents and children. Parents learn English and Spanish vocabulary, receive bilingual books, and receive information based on Preschool Standards. Sessions are led by the LFLP Headmaster and instructor, experienced with the LFLP. In partnership with Lectura Books and funded by generous donations, BASIC expands its C2G program to include the LFLP program tackling early literacy education.

Book GiveawaysRecognizing the significance of nurturing home libraries and language-rich environments, we provide children in the Borrego Springs community with high-quality books though out the year. For many, these are the first books they have ever owned. Owning books builds a love of learning and inspires children to share stories with their siblings, parents, and friends beyond the classroom. In collaboration with the local library, each LFLP participant is registered for a library card. Additionally every child age 0-5 receives a free monthly children's book via our program affiliate, Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Every year, we take pride in distributing hundreds of books to infants, children, youth, and their families.
